I found this cake mix and wanted to try it. I have made the Bienenstich Kuchen before but I wanted to try this out as it is a German product. I get lots of requests for this cake so I figured that maybe I was missing something. Many of the German mixes are really incredible I feel compared to many of ours here in the America.
I was really reallly happy with the results. You do have to add butter to the cake and real heavy whipping cream to the filling but this cake is outstanding.
The mix has the yeast and the dry ingredients in packets, then the almonds and crunchy topping in separate packets. Also the flavoring for the filling that you add to the cream wihich gives it a wonderful caramely taste.

You add the yeast and mix with water and butter and blend. |
knead the dough till you get a nice dough. |
Let the dough rise till it is double in size. (about 30-45 minutes) |
Place the dough in a 10 inch Springform pan that has been buttered and floured. Make some dimples in the dough. |
Let the dough rise again till about double. (another 15 minutes) |
Top the dough with the almonds and crunchy topping provided. |
Bake for 25-35 minutes at 350 degrees. |
The filling took all of 15 seconds to make. You add it to the cream and it thickens it immediately. I was very happy with the flavor. I don't like super sweet fake flavors. |
Cut the cake in half place the bottom on your cake plate. |
Spread the filling evenly on the cake with a cake spatula or whatever works best for you. The filling is quite thick so I used a metal cake spatula and dipped it in water so I could spread it easier and get it level so there would be a bit more than a 1/4 inch around the edges so it would show nicely when the cake is on top. |
Put the top on the cake and if you have an edge that has too much or too little filling carefully lift up the top and adjust the filling so it looks even all the way around.
|
I got 12 nice servings from the cake, and I felt it was near perfect. I am not sure that a scratch made cake would be any better but I will try. I was very happy that there was no artificial after taste or a filling that was overly sweet. You can buy the cake online at the German Deli. www.Germandeli.com This cake mix may cost a bit more than one in the US but it is worth every cent. |
