Kalter Schnauze

It has been a hot one in the US and I wish I was with my German Friends in Australia.
Patricia Holtkamp sent me a picture of her home in Australia, where it is snowing now.

Anyway for us in the states I want to do a nice
no bake dessert, that is kind of retro in Germany, but is making a comeback.

I am sorry for the long lag in newsletters.

It has been one thing after another this month,

KalterHund

I can't believe it is almost Oktoberfest season, so I wanted to get this German dessert
that was so perfect to make in hot days and it is an iconic one.

So much fun to take to a party, just the name is a conversational piece.

Kalter Hund
or
Which means Kalter=Cold Hund = Dog

Who says the Germans don't have a sense of humor.

This is a very popular German dessert and great for the summer. No baking required and it uses coconut oil, which many folks say it has health benefits.

Isn't coconut fat unhealthy?

Coconut oil contains no cholesterol, no fiber, and only traces of vitamins, minerals, and plant sterols. Plant sterols have a chemical structure that mimics blood cholesterol, and may help to block the absorption of cholesterol in the body. This is according to Harvard T.H. Chan school of public health.

So how did it get to be called Cold Dog?

Lots of images come to mind, but not a dessert....

The origin of the name some suspect, comes from the box car shape that resembles a coal mining car, sometimes called a Pit Hunte or Hund, which resembles the pan you make it in

A Pit Hund

Who came up with this recipe?

In the 1920's A German Company, Bahlsen introduced a recipe for this cake with a cookie they sold called Leibniz biscuit used to make the cake. It became a hit and was popular in Germany for birthdays in the 50's and 60's.

Is Kalter Hund only a German thing?

The same idea exists in many cultures. The most notable is in England it simply called
Chocolate Biscuit Cake, and was the favorite dessert of Queen Elizabeth.

from wikipedia

You could say that Queen Elizabeth's favorite dessert was Chocolate Biscuit Cake, and it is reported by Darren McGrady who was the Royal chef for 15 years. He said that she loved it so much she had a slice every day even if she was traveling.

If this cake has the Queen's approval then maybe you should give it a try! It is super easy to make.

It is also a great thing to take to a party, and can be made up ahead.

Do you have to use the Bahlsen Biscuits Cookies?

No there are other biscuit cookies, such as Marie Biscuits that work as well.
I like to use my Dads favorite cookie which is an almond cookie called Mandelschnitten.
