Going Forward into 2023

We had
A New Years Eve Meal
Lentil Stew, with Sausages, Ham, Cabbage and Potatoes,
to help bring in Good Luck,
Celebrate hope,
and honor my German ancestors.

1936 , In Front of Mt Hood near Portland, Oregon

In Germany they have many traditions for New Years Eve that is
called "Silvester" after Saint Silvester.

Many give " Good Luck" tokens
called "Glücksbringer"

and many give a New Years Card rather than a
Christmas Day Card.

The Pig is a Good Luck Symbol.

They also have traditonal meals meant to bring good luck in the New Year.

I have often wondered, how strange my ancestors thought that
eating lentils, pork and kraut would bring good luck financially?

It is said that people use good luck charms to deal with uncertainty.

Germans have faced a lot of uncertanties
through the centuries. Especially in the Winter when there were no
electricity, supermarkets, refrigeration, or credit cards!

The only storage for foods was what they could store in their cold cellars,
dry or smoke.

Many folks didn't make it through a harsh winter, sometimes they had poor harvest
and not much to eat.

On Christmas Eve 1903, my grandma I'm sure felt those uncertanties and wondered about her trip she would take moving across the ocean to America in 9 months.

I am not sure what they ate on that New Years Eve, but I am sure the cellar and had what was left from the harvest, smoked pork of some sort, and Sauerkraut for sure.

Both of these are considered a meal that will bring good luck.

My grandma (Emma Streib) dressed and ready for her departure to America.

They also could have had Lentils and Spaetzle which is the
National Dish of the Swabian Alb that was close to where my grandma grew up. It's also where Lentils were grown
in Germany up until the mid-1900's.

I added Lentils to our New Years Eve meal, as I always thought it was
interesting that many Germans have felt lentils
were a good luck token or
"Glücksbringer" sounds like
(GLOOKs-bringa)
kind-of a silent r

They look like coins....
and when you add them to water they expand!
Hopefully our coin will in 2023 also.

Dutch Oven Review

Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Ovens

Why should you buy an expensive cast iron dutch oven that
has been enameled?

The biggest purpose of the enamel in my estimation is that it won't react
to acidic foods, so it won't discolor them. You can also marinate in them, they won't rust on you.

What to Look For in an Enameled Dutch Oven?
The go to name for enameled Dutch ovens is of course Le Creuset.
It seems ridiculously expensive. WHY so much.
Well in reading it seems like their enamel is a higher quality than the cheaper ones. zz
Le Creuset is a 100 year old company in France, using the highest quality techniques
in making cast iron and enameling techniques. It is meant to last generations
and has a limited warranty against chipping of the porcelain.
