Doing a Personal
Oktoberfest Dinner

We like to spend the whole month of September and October celebrating German heritage, food and music.

Smoked Bratwurst
with
Braised Cabbage and Kraut

We love to have small Oktoberfest celebrations, at home with a few friends and family. Simple impromptu fun, with food and music.

My wife found these wonderful pretzel brat buns so I suggested we do my favorite braised cabbage and kraut recipe that along with a traditional braised Sauerkraut with bacon, onions and apples and other goodies, I like to add some fresh chopped cabbage to give it a a little crunch along with the lightly sweet and savory kraut.

German Potato Salads

I assumed that there was only one German Potato Salad
growing up. My grandma made it a simple sweet vinaigrette with sauted bacon and onions.
It was delightful as I have always loved
sweet and savory flavors.

This my grandma's recipe for
Hot German Potato Salad

Cold German Potato Salad

We like to do a lighter version of the potato salad,
with a simple vinaigrette flavored with German mustard.
Add some sweet peppers to it makes it nice.

Swabian Potato Salad

In parts of German they make a simple vinaigrette and potato version of
German Potato Salad. This recipe is popular in many parts of Germany,
But this one is from Swabia.

All the recipes I read say it is best served at room temperature.

I love the simplicy of this potato salad but there are cool techniques
to getting this perfect, so a little reading up on it helps.

Eaton's Potato Salad

This recipe is a nice blend of your choice of potato salads
blended with crunchy iceburg lettuce.
You can add any other garnishes as well.

Dutch Ovens

Dutch Oven Review

Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Ovens

Why should you buy an expensive cast iron dutch oven that
has been enameled?

a

What to Look For in an Enameled Dutch Oven?
The go to name for enameled Dutch ovens is of course Le Creuset.
It seems ridiculously expensive. WHY so much.
Well in reading it seems like their enamel is a higher quality than the cheaper ones. zz
Le Creuset is a 100 year old company in France, using the highest quality techniques
in making cast iron and enameling techniques. It is meant to last generations
and has a limited warranty against chipping of the porcelain.

I heartily endorse these products from my Amazon affiliate Store

Cast Iron Skillets

I adore cooking on cast iron. Especially the cast iron handed down by my relatives.

Legend Cast Iron is a great brand

This is a 7 quart Dutch Oven,
that is lightly pre seasoned and
good for making a great stew, braising, frying,
on electric, gas or induction stove.
