I had never heard of Ostermontag before.

Growing up I heard about

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday,

but never Easter Monday.
It is celebrated for the "Resurection"
Makes sense.

I went searching and found this on German culture sites,
that Ostermontag is a public holiday

This is a very popular spring dish in the state of Hesse.
It is a very light and satisfying dish. I had it this week and couldn't wait
to have it again the next day. Very simple, and the flavors marry perfect.

Eggs Ala Goldenrod

This is a wonderful dish made with hard cooked eggs and a creamy white sauce poured over toast triangles.
You grate the hard cooked yolk over the top for a garnish. It is not especially a German dish, although
eggs on toast surely is. It has always been a special dish for me since my young adult life.

You can of course add asparagus or spinach to this simple dish.

Biography of my grandma
Emma Block
From Germany with Love tells the story of my grandma, Emma Block, growing up in a little town in Baden/ Würtemberg, Germany near Heidelberg named Steinsfurt. Then at the age of 15 immigrating to the United States, taking a train with one of her sisters and brothers to Hamburg and sailing the Atlantic with other hope filled Germans wanting to make a life in the "New World". It was not easy but with good values learned in her German upbringing made a full life, had a wonderful family with lots of fun and celebration including the great German meals.

Arme Ritter

German Style French Toast

Interesting name for French Toast?

Armes = Arms and Ritter means Knight as in an Armed Knight.

How does this make sense?

Arme Ritter literally means "Poor Knight" in German and if you put into a translator "Armer Ritter" then it returns "French Toast".

This is adapted from an English dish that became known as
"Poor Knights of Windsor"

Making Armer Ritter is not much different than making French Toast except this particular German recipe calls for breading it in bread crumbs. 2 things Old German house holds had was stale bread and bread crumbs. Nothing was wasted.
This recipe is adapted from the DDR museum website
They soak the bread in the milk first then dip it into the egg which you find this technique in a lot of German recipes to bring stale bread to life as a binder or for dumplings to mention a few. The other thing is that they used a bit of grated lemon peel in the dip.

Hefekranz, Hefezopf
(Easter Bread)

Hefe =yeast     Kranz= wreath    Zopf = braided

The Hefekranz traditon of braiding goes back many years. The braiding of bread was
perhaps started as a symbolic tradition. Though it can not be fully coroborated, Max Höfer a bread researcher says that many years ago when a husband died the wife would sacrifice her life in his honor and follow him to in the grave. Later just a women's braid went into the grave and as time passed a braided loaf of bread went into the grave.

There were many ways to make a "Hair Sacrifice" be it the shaved monks head or giving a braid as the hair was
by some cultures considered the best part of you. It was also a way of honoring someone or giving a gift to
give a braided loaf to honor the deceased. It some areas it was given as a proposal of marriage.
Since then it also has been baked for many festivals, Christtmas, New Years and of course Easter.
Easter the shape is often in a circular wreath and called Hefekranz.

Some other historians claim that it was developed by the first bakers union in Switzerland started in 1256
in the middle ages. The first recorded braided loaf was in 1430.

Regardless it is nice to carry on centuries old traditions and make a braided loaf for Easter.
It is really fairly easy.

There are many ways to decorate your loaf and you can also add different fruits or nuts.
