Munich Oktoberfest Memories
Recipes and Music

It is always sad to see the Oktoberfest in Munich come to an end.
But there are others around that go all through October.
Like at Big Bear Lake in California, one of my favorite.
We are not down there and I will miss it.

I sure appreciate all the wonderful emails you send me telling
me you enjoy the music and all your ideas and links to great stuff to share here.

I have learned so much through this newsletter and in this issue almost everything is
goodies that I have recieved from nice folks.

Closing Night at the Hacker Pschorr Festzelt (beer ten

the Most Popular Closing Song of Munich Oktoberfest
Sierra Madre

My Oktoberfest experience wouldn't be complete withouth listening to and watching Sierra Madre on closing night with the sparklers.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a video from 2919 but this one will give you the experience as if it was yesterday.
I LOVE this song that was introduced to me by Gert Reitner in 2009. He lived very close to the Weisen and went many times.

At first I wondered what a Mountain Range in Mexico had to do with Oktoberfest....

The song is about a field worker that starts work at sunrise and is greeted by the mountains, works all day and then reflects on the mountains again at sunset as he is going home. As Oktoberfest closes we reflect on the good times we had.

Gert replied to me and said, wait till your in a beer tent at Munich and experience 10,000 people singing this with sparklers.

So since then I have been hooked!

The song caught on in 1987 when this band did a remake of the 1970's hit.

Lyics Sierra Madre

When the morning comes
Wenn der Morgen kommt

And the last shadows pass
Und die letzten Schatten vergehen

Looking up at the people of the Sierra
Schauen die Menschen der Sierra hinauf

To the sunny heights
Zu den sonnigen Höhen

Look up
Schauen hinauf

Where the white condor pulls so lonely
Wo der weiße Kondor so einsam zieht

Like a greeting to the sun
Wie ein Gruß an die Sonne

Do you sound an old song?
Erklingt ihr altes Lied
Sierra, Sierra Madre del Sur
Sierra, Sierra Madre del Sur

Sierra, Sierra Madre, oh, oh
Sierra, Sierra Madre, oh, oh

Sierra, Sierra Madre del Sur
Sierra, Sierra Madre del Sur

Sierra, Sierra Madre
Sierra, Sierra Madre
When the work is done
Wenn die Arbeit getan

And the evening peace begins
Und der Abendfrieden beginnt

Look at the people
Schauen die Menschen hinauf

Where the Sierra burns in the evening red
Wo die Sierra im Abendrot brennt

And you
Und sie…

A Great Soup for the Fall

Pumpkin Soup
(Kurbissuppe)

Karen Kinnane my friend just got back from Germany and she emailed me and said you ought to do a pumpkin soup!

In her words ....

The lounges in Munich and Leipzig both had big slow cookers full of creamy pumpkin soup. I went to an outdoor student block party on the Thierbacher Strasse and the main course was a big tureen of pumpkin soup. It was a party where you paid 1.35 euros to attend and you got entertained by three bands, one hour each, and you got a bowl of pumpkin soup and an open face sandwich with your choice of sliced cold meats or cheeses. There were free cookies and fruit on sticks dipped in chocolate for the children. Being Germany and environmentally conscious students, the soup was served in real bowls, none of which matched, and you returned the bowl when you were done eating. At the local German restaurant pumpkin soup was on the menu. Pumpkins were everywhere for decoration (not Jack O' Lanterns!), just pumpkins.

This is a fun soup to make and I will show you how to do it like this in the actual pumpkin.

It is great for a Fall Party or Oktoberfest

This Recipe also uses Butternut squash. This is the first year that we grew some
at our new home Twisting Roots Farm. The fall has frozen the plants but our squash remains good.

Closing Night at the Augustiner Tent

This is a fun video of closing night in the Augustiner Festzelt. These folks are having too much fun .....

Some of the highlights of this video by Phoenixnixe

First is a nice Schuplatter from some good looking guys in Lederhosen

On closing night many of the songs they dim the lights and light sparklers, I absolutely love this tradition.

I guess it is a tradition here for the Kellnerin (waitresses) to go up to the balcony and take off their aprons and wave them in the air to the music and then throw them off after the song. \

Schweinshaxe

The king of Oktoberfest Meals

If Brathendl (Roast Chicken) is the queen of Oktoberfest dishes then Schweineshaxe is the king
and ever popular even with healthy gourmet cooking every where in our lives.

Schweinshaxe is so much fun to make and it will take a few for you to master the crispy crackly skin and
the buttery fall apart tender meat inside but
no matter what all your trials will be delicious.

Closing Party at the Hofbrau Tent

This is one of the biggest tents at the Oktoberfest that holds 10,000 people, and here at closing a sea of sparklers as they all sing to the music.

The song they are singing is "Angels" by Robbie Williams,
every year becoming more and more popular
