The History of Currywurst

What is a currywurst ?

A Currywurst is a German street food, that is composed of cooked German sausage or bratwurst, that is shallow fried in oil and then sliced into rounds (usually), and topped with a catsup that is flavored mainly with curry powder and a few other things.

I have spent a great deal of time researching this German specialty that is as big there that the hamburger is in the U.S.
There are hundreds of web pages on the history of currywurst and recipes on the web, so why should I do another one?
I hope to add something to the wealth of knowledge on this food and perhaps what makes a simple dish go from fun recipe to Super Rock Star, household word, and part of everyday lifestyle meal, selling billions and billions.

Where did Currywurst get it's begining?

The accepted story is that In 1949 a lady named Herta Heuwer traded some spirits for some curry powder and perhaps some Worcestishire sauce and with some tomato sauce she made a catsup that became the trademark of this fast food that was termed, "Steak for the Common Man".

Herta was a lady who was a "Trümmerfrau" ( sounds like TRU- mare- frau) meaning a "A Rubble Lady" that helped sort through and restore the ruins of the destroyed city of Berlin. Herta Heuwer (pronounced like HOO-ver or I also heard it HO-ver), was practicing the common art of bartering. My dad in WW2 said he traded chocolate bar rations to house wives in France for fresh foods the soldiers had a hard time getting. Herta traded spirits with British soldiers stationed in Berlin for curry spice and she also most likely got Worcestershire sauc and tomato catsup from the British.

More about the Trümmerfrau.

She mixed the two and added some other seasonings and came up with a great tasting sauce
and she couldn't call it catsup but since it was spicy like chili she called it "Chillup". I wonder if she didn't use American Catsup in the sauce also, because why else would Herta name her sauce, a modified version of Catsup

It was great over bratwurst, so she sold it on the streets and it was referred to as
"Steak for the Common Man". and it became an immediate hit!
In time other folks copied her idea and now there are Currywurst stands all over Berlin, and in other parts of the country.

With so many tourists it became an internationally loved food. Berlin has a museum dedicated to Herta and Currywurst.

Does Anyone Dispute Herta Heuwer as the Creator of Currywurst?

YES!!

This is a short blurb from Wikipedia, but I will address this more later,

The 1993 novel Die Entdeckung der Currywurst (English title: "The Invention of Curried Sausage", ISBN 978-0811212977) by Uwe Timm was made into a 1998 play and a 2008 film both of the same name. The plot is based on an alternative but unproven theory that currywurst was invented in Hamburg.

I have read that there is a Northern Currywurst society that works to establish what they believe to be the truth about who invented Currywurst.

How do you make Currywurst?

A curry wurst uses the wurst of your choice, be it raw or smoked. In Germany it usually isn't smoked but a tender cooked Bratwurst that is then crisped up in oil then cut into rounds and topped with a curry catsup. It is then sprinkled with curry powder and then served usually with french fries or maybe a German potato salad. In Germany the usual sauce for the fries is mayo not catsup.
