The History of Mississippi Pot Roast

Make the Recipe   | Video of the Creator Making Mississippi Roast

This recipe is a great story of how a dish becomes an icon in a culture.

Now at the time of writing this I didn't know about this recipe that the New York TImes food editor says it ..."Owns the Internet"! In a short time there are over 1 million pins for this recipe on pinterest.

I was unimpressed when my friend Pam Wetzel told me about it online, and she said she just threw in these ingredients. However she said that her grand daughter always begs for this recipe and all the family gobbles up any leftovers. Even picky guests asked her for her recipe.

Pam serves it over mashed potatoes and with cooked carrots

She said it was Mississippi Roast so I searched online and WALAH ...there were thousands of articles on it, including some from the Food Network, New York Times food editor, and a youtube from Good Morning America. (see below)

The creator of this recipe Robin Chapman of Ripley, Mississippi has been on Good Morning America, and the Food Network, demonstrating this simple but great recipe.

She modified a recipe her aunt did and made it less spicy and simplified it by using 2 different seasoning packets.

I mean there are a lot of good recipes out there
Why this one?

How did this recipe get so popular?

A similar thing happened with German Chocolate Cake in 1957

A concoction of chocolate cake and a southern pecan coconut dressing.
It is not the slightest bit German.

. It recieved a prize and was published in a newspater and then it spread nearly as fast but read this in the Green Bay Press Gazette -1957

The roast will start to fall apart a bit, and the gravy is all ready made for you.
take 2 forks and shred it up a bit.

If you want to be more creative you can make a...
