Falscher Hare
German Style Decoratie Meatloaf
with
Curry Catsup Glaze

Ingredients:

1 lb. Ground Beef, Turkey, Pork, or combination
1/2 cup dried Bread slices, soaked in milk or water
1/2 cup Oatmeal
1 Egg beaten
1 cup fine diced Onion
1/2 cup losely packed diced Parsley
2 tablespoons Catsup

Fun Additions:
1/2 cup diced Celery
1/2 cup diced Bell Pepper, any color
1/2 fine diced Carrot

4 hard boiled Eggs

1 cup Curry Catsup for glaze
Simple Recipe:
1/3 cup Catsup
1/3 cup Tomato Salsa
2 tablespoons BBQ sauce
2 Tablespoons Curry Powder

Directions:
1. Gather your ingredients together, measure them out.

2. German recipes like to saute their onions that go into a frikadeller and similar recipes also is a good choice for meatlloaf. You can saute all the vegetables as well which brings out more flavor. Adding the onions and parsley add a lot to the meatloaf.

3 .If your doing this on the BBQ then grab a plank. I don't soak them like some suggest,
but I don't usually put them under the fire. They often get dark underneath but the integrity of the wood is never harmed, and I wash them, and reuse them!

4. Anyway I place a layer of the mix down on the plank and then cut the ends off the eggs and lay them side by side down the center. Form the rest of the mix around the eggs and make a nice looking loaf.

5. Combine the ingredients for a simple curry catsup. Glaze the meatloaf and start the BBQ, close the lid and let it pre heat as if you were using an oven. I don't use a thermometer but it needs to feel like about 325 to 375 degrees.

Make sure the plank is not under the fire.
This is called offset cooking. whether coals or gas, keep the fire away from direct flames underneath. Put the cover down on the BBQ and let it slowly cook with the fire or charcoal and wood and let it add a bit of smoke. This will take about 45 min to an hour.

When the meatloaf reaches 160 degrees it is done.

Sometimes for special occasions you can dress the Falscher Hare up and make him look like a rabbit.

I used spaghetti noodles for the whiskers, and radish for the nose and boiled egg and capers for the eyes.

It is great served cold, with vegetable garnish, potato salad, and other great sides.
